All of our coffees' and teas' are Fair Trade!

Fair Trade Certification empowers farmers and farm workers to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Fair Trade is much more than a fair price!  Fair Trade principles include:

  • Fair price: Democratically organized farmer groups receive a guaranteed minimum floor price and an additional premium for certified organic products. Farmer organizations are also eligible for pre-harvest credit.
  • Fair labor conditions: Workers on Fair Trade farms enjoy freedom of association, safe working conditions, and living wages. Forced child labor is strictly prohibited.
  • Direct trade: With Fair Trade, importers purchase from Fair Trade producer groups as directly as possible, eliminating unnecessary middlemen and empowering farmers to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace.
  • Democratic and transparent organizations: Fair Trade farmers and farm workers decide democratically how to invest Fair Trade revenues.
  • Community development: Fair Trade farmers and farm workers invest Fair Trade premiums in social and business development projects like scholarship programs, quality improvement trainings, and organic certification.
Environmental sustainability: Harmful agrochemicals and GMOs are strictly prohibited in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers' health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations.

CHOOSING YOU GRIND

Grinding your coffee beans is a very important step in making good coffee. The type of brewer you are using and you own taste dictate the best grind for your beans. Although we have the capability to grind at many levels, it usually comes down to 3.

Coarse: French Press
Medium: Electric perk or Auto Drip
Fine: Gold Mesh Filter (auto drip) or Espresso.

If you have a grinder at home then only grind what you are going to use. We always recommend only buying beans that you will use in the next 5 to 7 days to ensure their freshness.

Java Estate Kali Bendo
City Roast
Most of the coffee grown in Java is grown at altitudes of 4500 feet in and around the area surrounding Bali. Java is wet-processed Indonesian coffee known for its low acidity and high degree of body. Our Java Kali Bendo is roasted to release the bean's natural earthy and herbacious aromas, including a hint of mild fresh tobacco, and a surprising chocolate finish. The mouth-feel is full bodied as it should be.

Sumatra Mandheling DP
Full City Roast
Sumatra Mandheling coffee is produced outside of Padang, which is the west coast coffee district of Sumatra, one of the main islands that make up Indonesia. Many consider the Mandheling coffees to be among the world's finest and most admired, and certainly among the best Sumatran coffees.  You can expect a low-key acidity and a heavy, almost syrupy, body with a concentrated and complex flavor.  The taste is distinct, smooth and earthy.

Costa Rica SHB "Café Terruno"
City+ Roast
Nearly all of Costa Rican coffee worthy of mention – and qualifying as gourmet quality coffee – is grown in the high mountain volcanic soils of Costa Rica's central valley. The best grades of Costa Rican coffee are grown in four districts surrounding the capitol of San Jose.
The elevation, temperature, and rainfall are ideal for coffee production. The combination of ideal climactic conditions with outstanding soils produces a hard, dense bean, rich in essential oils that produce an intensely aromatic cup of coffee overflowing with rich flavor.

Ethiopian Harrar OCFCU Certified Organic
Full City Roast
Ethiopian Harrar is grown between 5,000 and 6,000 feet in the dry highlands surrounding the ancient city of Harrar (we use the ancient spelling of Harar, but "Harrar" is also used). Coffee grows wild here, as it did when first discovered in Ethiopia. During the tenth century, coffee was considered food. Small, family farmers harvest and process the beans naturally, without the use of water, allowing the cherries to ferment right on the beans.  Ethiopian Harrar can have a strong dry edge, winy to fruit-like acidity, rich aroma, and heavy body. In the best Harrars one can observe an intense aroma of blueberries or blackberries. Some years are more tea-like and some are more earthy and heavy.

Brazil Estate, Fazenda "San Jose"
Full City Roast

While many of us in the United States aren't too familiar with Brazilian coffee as a single origin drip coffee, many blends--both drip and espresso utilize this popular bean. Brazilian coffees tend to fill in the middle notes of an espresso - filling in the gaps where the more delicate Central Americans, Indonesians, and Africans leave off. In addition, they impart excellent body that allows an espresso to come through milk.
